Named for Stephen A. Douglas, Abraham Lincoln's opponent in the 1860 presidential election, Douglasville's history is rooted first in farming, then as a postbellum railroad town with a thriving commercial district. Today, the city's downtown area, with its vintage brick homes and offices, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
